Feds probe LaPlace bar owner for BP claims, tax filings

Federal investigators are expanding their inquiry into a LaPlace tax preparer accused of shortchanging the Internal Revenue Service on hundreds of her clients’ returns. They’re turning their focus to BP oil spill damage claims that she filed.

Shawanda Nevers ran a brisk business as a tax preparer out of the back office of her bar, 3LJ’s Café Services and Sportsbar, until the Justice Department’s tax division filed a civil complaint last year to block her from filing returns for clients. According to the complaint, bar employees said Nevers had a line of clients clutching their tax forms during tax season each year, and IRS agents said she was responsible for at least 735 fraudulent returns from 2009 to 2011.
